What is Artificial Intelligence?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a science that involves designing machines as intelligent as human beings. The ability of AI to perform various tasks keeps on growing tremendously. It works by building software using research outcomes on how the human brain responds to different situations.

Types of Intelligence

AI is categorized into two types based on their ability to uncover solutions. Weak AI, also named as narrow AI are those designed to perform a particular task. Whereas, Strong AI, or artificial general intelligence has the ability to find solutions even when an unfamiliar task is given. Without a doubt, AI has taken its place in most of the fields.

AI – An Overview

The recent innovations prove that AI has the ability to redesign healthcare, thereby saving lives. Using AI is easy for doctors to diagnose and analyze any condition by pulling up the universally accessible medical history of patients. Also, ambulatory patients can be observed by AI robots to provide basic care and be responsive to patient needs.

At Present, IBM’s Watson uses AI system to improve cancer treatment by providing a rapid report on genetic mutations of specific disease and briefs about the possible therapies. Though decisions about treatment depend on doctors and patients, AI would possibly help them identify suitable therapy for individuals rather than following standards. By Jan 2017, IBM workers started to use Watson supercomputer technology to find the most effective drugs and clinical trials for specific cancers. This is done by collecting medical records of cancer patients and updating them in AI computers, which analyses the genomic profile and finds cancer causing mutations, and recommends evidence-based treatment. It also helps the physicians to find eligible patients to perform clinical trials and discover the impact of oncology drugs.

Walter DeBrouwer, a Belgian based technology entrepreneur invented an AI supported robot-doctor called “doc.ai” that interprets lab results. The doc.ai uses natural language processing application to connect with patients to explain about their lab results. It also extends its assistance by referring the patient to a human doctor in its database. On the other hand, Aetna Health launched a new security system using AI that makes password optional. The security system works by monitoring how and where the customer uses the device and also provides choices of biometric factors to confirm authentication. This system is considered as a significant invention because, more than three billion passwords were hacked by criminals in 2016, according to Shape Security.

Verdict

Despite the progress that other industries have made using AI, Healthcare will be the one that truly makes positive outcomes in human lives. Although we cannot foresee our future, it is quite evident that life will be whirling around AI-powered machines.
